So, the date has been set – 29th August 2025. An executive order has been issued to confirm that the U.S. will be eliminating the duty-free exemption for every country, making all imports – including those valued under $800 – dutiable.
Summary of what we know so far:
- Duties apply to every shipment, regardless of value or size
- All shipments must include country of origin information
- Changes take affect 12:01 a.m. EDT on 29 August 2025
Whatever you ship, here we'll show you how to easily calculate tariff and duty, so you can be all prepared for the changes ahead. Its actually very simple.
#How to work out the duty and tariff of your product into the US from 29th August 2025.
To understand what the financial implications of the end of the de minimis exemption will be on your shipments, you will need to work out the cost of the duty PLUS the tariff rate for the country of origin of your product.
This is straightforward if you know two things:
- The HS code for your product: Search the US duty by HS code on the US database here
- The new tariff rate by country: If the UK is the country of origin it's 10%. For other country of origin tariffs go to the bottom of this page or here
#Examples of how to calculate your duties and taxes on the parcels you import from the UK to the U.S.
Here are two examples of how you can calculate the additional duty and tariff for a shipment to the US:
- How much to import an umbrella valued at £15 from the UK to the U.S. using SAMOS?
Duty =
Standard umbrella (listed here under HS code 6601) = 0%
Tariff =
UK country of origin = 10%
Therefore:
Duty: 0% of £15 = £0
Tariff: 10% of £15 = £1.50
Total duty and tariff = £1.50
- How much to import a women’s cotton dress valued at £40 from the UK to the U.S. using SAMOS?
Duty =
Women’s cotton dress (listed here under HS code 6204.12.00) = 14.9%
Tariff =
Country of Origin UK = 10%
Therefore:
Duty: 14.9% of £40 = £5.96
Tariff: 10% of £40 = £4.00
Total duties and tariff = £9.96
You can see that it is actually quite easy to calculate. You'll most likley want to change your checkout process to accomodate this charge. Most shop platforms will give you guidance on how to implement this.

#FAQ’s
What does de minimis mean?
De minimis refers to something so minor or insignificant that it's not worth taking into consideration or addressing by law. In shipping, if the value of the product is under a country’s threshold it may be considered tax and duty free.
What is the de minimis rule?
This rule is intended to streamline the import process for small, low-value shipments and reduce the administrative burden on customs authorities. The specific value threshold for de minimis exemptions varies significantly from country to country.
Why did de minimis change?
On July 30, the Trump Administration announced it would suspend the global de minimis threshold for commercial imports. This executive order ends the duty-free rule for shipments valued under $800, which previously entered the U.S. without customs duties.
Is de minimis still in effect for imports from the UK to the U.S.?
As of 29th August 2025, shipments and goods originating from the UK will no longer be exempt from paying duties on shipments under $800 into the U.S. as per all countries worldwide.
