 Why ship to South Africa?
---------------------------

With its advanced digital infrastructure, startup-friendly environment and proactive support for digital transformation, South Africa has become Africa’s leading digital commerce hub.

The growth of smartphones, faster mobile connectivity, and expanding social and streaming platforms has changed how South Africans consume information, compare prices and purchase products online. This presents major opportunities for international retailers.

- 93.9 USD E-commerce revenue per user in South Africa
- 13.1% Penetration rate of e-commerce in Africa

The e-commerce landscape
------------------------

More South African businesses and consumers are entering the digital marketplace than ever before. In 2023, over 76% of the population used the internet, and this is expected to grow by around 22% by 2029. [1](#ref1)

 Statista’s Digital Market Outlook projects:

- 11.7 million e-commerce users in 2025
- Growing to 21.52 million by 2029

Consumers are also shifting towards flexible digital payment methods, reflecting the rise of fintech across the country:

- Mobile payments are increasing due to convenience and low cost.
- Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) options are gaining traction.
- Biometric payments and digital wallets such as Apple Pay and Samsung Pay are becoming standard.

Meanwhile, international platforms like Shein, Temu and Amazon dominate online marketplace traffic. Although most online purchases are made on domestic sites:

- 27% of South African shoppers purchase from the U.S. (Amazon.com (U.S.) is the third most visited e-commerce site in the country).
- 14% purchase from Europe. [2](#ref2)

South African consumers are increasingly value-driven, spending more time comparing prices, searching for cheap deals, and using social platforms for recommendations.

International sale days such as Black Friday and Cyber Monday are extremely popular in South Africa, offering major opportunities for retailers wanting to boost visibility and sales.

 Logistics
-----------

Shipping logistics in South Africa involve a variety of services like freight forwarding, container transport, and express delivery, offered by international and local companies. Key ports include Durban and Cape Town, which serve as hubs for both domestic and international trade routes.
