-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If your business ships to the US through the international postal network, you'll soon face a very different customs process.

**On 24 July 2026**, the temporary 10% global tariff will expire and be replaced by a new system of Section 301 tariffs. At the same time, postal shipments will no longer benefit from the simplified customs treatment many retailers have relied on.

If you're ussing a postal provider, it's worth reviewing your UK-to-US shipping strategy to make sure it still offers the best value for your business.

While these regulatory changes may require some adjustments, they also create an ideal opportunity to compare US shipping rates, review your delivery costs and explore whether a specialist cross-border shipping provider could save you both time and money.

[\#](#content-whats-changing "Permalink")What's changing?
---------------------------------------------------------

From 24 July:

- The temporary 10% tariff expires and is replaced by Section 301 tariffs, which will apply to many goods imported into the US.
- International postal shipments will no longer receive simplified customs treatment.
- Businesses will need to provide more detailed customs information for every shipment, including accurate 10-digit
- [**Harmonised Tariff Schedule**](https://samos-e.com/resources/what-is-an-hs-code) (HS) codes, product values and country of origin.

In short, shipping through the postal service will involve much of the same customs compliance expected when using commercial carriers.

[\#](#content-why-is-this-happening "Permalink")Why is this happening?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

For many years, low-value parcels entering the US benefited from simplified customs processes under the **Section 321** [**de minimis**](https://samos-e.com/blog/customs/us-deminimis-change-simple-guide) exemption, helping e-commerce businesses keep cross-border shipping straightforward and cost-effective.

The US government has been tightening these rules to increase customs oversight, improve revenue collection and ensure postal shipments are treated more like standard commercial imports.

At the same time, the temporary tariffs introduced under **Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974** are reaching the end of their 150-day legal limit. From 24 July 2026, the US is transitioning to longer-term **Section 301 tariffs**.

[\#](#content-how-do-the-new-section-301-tariffs-affect-uk-ecommerce-businesses "Permalink")How do the new Section 301 tariffs affect UK ecommerce businesses?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If your ecommerce business currently relies on postal shipping to the US, you'll need to prepare for a more detailed customs clearance process.

That means:

- Providing complete and accurate customs declarations.
- Using full 10-digit [**HS codes**](https://samos-e.com/resources/what-is-an-hs-code).
- Declaring accurate product values and [**country of origin**](https://samos-e.com/resources/what-is-meant-by-country-of-origin).
- Paying any applicable US customs duties based on the product classification.

Accurate customs data has always been important, but these changes increase the emphasis on getting declarations right. Incomplete or inaccurate information may result in delays, additional customs checks or parcels being returned.

[\#](#content-will-shipping-costs-to-the-us-increase "Permalink")Will shipping costs to the US increase?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Potentially.

Although the customs process is becoming more detailed, the biggest impact for many businesses isn't necessarily the duties themselves — it's the administration that comes with them.

Businesses that have traditionally used postal services because of their simplified customs processes may now find there is less difference between postal providers and specialist cross-border shipping companies than there once was.

That's why now is a sensible time to compare your UK-to-US shipping costs, delivery times and customs support.

[\#](#content-should-you-continue-using-postal-shipping "Permalink")Should you continue using postal shipping?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There's no single right answer — it depends on your products, shipping volumes and growth plans.

However, with postal shipments now subject to many of the same customs requirements as commercial carriers, it's worth asking whether your current provider is still the best fit.

A specialist cross-border shipping partner may offer advantages such as:

- More competitive UK-to-US shipping rates.
- Faster delivery services.
- Dedicated customs clearance support.
- Expert advice on US customs duties and tariffs.
- Better shipment tracking and visibility.
- A more personalised service as your business grows.

Changes in regulation often provide the perfect opportunity to step back, review your shipping strategy and make sure it still supports your business goals and protects your margins.

[\#](#content-frequently-asked-questions "Permalink")Frequently Asked Questions
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

**Will UK parcels to the US still be duty-free for shipments sent by post?**

The customs treatment of UK parcels entering the US is changing. From 24 July 2026, international postal shipments will be processed under the same customs framework as commercial imports, with duties applied according to product classification and country of origin where applicable.

**What is the de minimis rule?**

The US de minimis rule (Section 321) previously allowed qualifying low-value imports to benefit from simplified customs treatment. The latest regulatory changes alter how postal shipments entering the US are processed.

**Will delivery charges from the UK to the US increase?**

They may do, depending on the products you sell and the shipping method you use. Additional customs administration can increase overall costs, making this a good time to compare UK-to-US shipping providers and postal rates to the US.

**Do I need a 10-digit HTS code?**

Yes. Businesses shipping goods to the US should ensure every product is classified using the correct 10-digit [**Harmonised Tariff Schedule**](https://samos-e.com/resources/what-is-an-hs-code) (HS) code to support customs clearance.

**Should I still use a postal service to ship to the US?**

Many growing ecommerce businesses are reviewing their shipping options. With postal providers now operating under similar customs requirements to commercial carriers, comparing delivery charges, transit times and customs support can help you find the best long-term solution.

**Ready to review your UK-to-US shipping strategy?**

With new US customs regulations taking effect from 24 July 2026, now is an ideal time to review your shipping process and make sure it's still delivering the best value for your business.

If you'd like to explore how SAMOS could simplify your US shipping, improve customs support and potentially reduce your UK-to-US delivery costs, we'd be happy to help. Get in touch for pressure-free chat.
