------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Black Friday, Cyber Monday and the festive season are just around the corner — not to mention New Year sales and Lunar New Year.

If you’re running an ecommerce brand, you’re probably well prepared by now. Your stock is sorted. Your systems are in place. You’re right in the thick of your marketing campaigns.

But are you ready for returns?

From an operator’s point of view, here at [**SAMOS**](https://samos-e.com/) — the international ecommerce logistics specialists — you’d be surprised how many businesses leave returns as an afterthought.

We get it. Returns don’t make money. In fact, they can be a significant financial drain.

However, when you consider that as many as 1 in 3\[i\] Black Friday deliveries can result in a return, it’s clear that returns deserve some serious attention during peak season. So much so that the Tuesday after Black Friday has earned its own name: **Returns Tuesday.**

There’s another reason to take returns seriously, too: **brand loyalty.**

As ecommerce brands are all too aware, trust and customer loyalty are among the biggest assets any company can have — whether you’re a small outfit, a scaling business or a well-established brand.

If a customer has a poor experience with a delivery or return, particularly during peak season, they may think twice about ordering from you again.

So, now that we’ve established the importance of getting your returns process sorted before peak, when and how should you go about it?

[\#](#content-why-you-should-start-planning-your-peak-returns-now "Permalink")Why you should start planning your peak returns now
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There’s no time like the present. And, when it comes to peak season returns, there really isn’t.

Many businesses leave returns planning a little too late. Some don’t even think about it until returns start to build up.

But here’s the thing: when you’re in the thick of peak season and dealing with all sorts of delivery challenges, returns will probably be the last thing on your mind.

From an operator’s point of view, there’s no getting away from it: peak season can be chaotic.

Even the best-laid plans can go awry when you least expect them to. Last year, for example, [**changes to US import tariffs**](https://samos-e.com/blog/us-shipping/shipping-to-the-us-from-the-uk-what-changes-on-24-july-2026) shortly before peak season created significant disruption for deliveries into the country.

The truth is, parcel carriers and shipping partners can’t simply wave a magic wand and get your parcel from A to B when something goes wrong.

That’s why it pays to troubleshoot your returns operation before peak begins.

How can I get my returns ready for peak?

There are plenty of processes you can put in place now. Some are relatively simple; others may take a little longer to implement.

Either way, putting the right foundations in place now will leave you in a much better position when peak season arrives.

Let’s be honest: there will probably still be a problem you haven’t planned for. There often is in logistics.

But the more you can troubleshoot and prepare for now, the more effectively you can mitigate those unexpected issues later.

**1. Plan your returns capacity**

To ensure you have adequate returns capacity before peak season, start by forecasting your expected returns volumes and making sure your logistics partners can handle them.

Lock in carrier agreements where necessary, establish dedicated returns workflows and make sure you have enough operational capacity to process the additional volume.

It’s much easier to solve a capacity problem before peak than when returns are already piling up.

**2. Make sure your data and labelling are right**

Data quality and [**accurate labelling**](https://samos-e.com/resources/how-to-create-shipping-labels) are easy to overlook, but they can make a huge difference to the speed of your returns process.

An incorrect or incomplete address can quickly turn a straightforward return into a much bigger problem.

And there’s an important difference between a data issue during normal trading periods and the same issue during peak.

If a parcel is put to one side because of a labelling or data problem during a quieter period, there’s a good chance someone will pick it up and resolve the issue fairly quickly.

During peak, however, that parcel could be sitting in a corner for considerably longer before someone gets around to it.

Make sure your customer and parcel data is clean, your labelling processes are robust and your systems are set up to catch errors before they become operational problems.

**3. Give customers visibility over their returns**

Keeping customers onside is important whether they’re purchasing your product or returning it.

One of the simplest ways to do this is to make sure they know what’s happening at every stage of the returns process.

Make your expected processing times clear. Provide regular updates on the status of their return. And, wherever possible, give customers access to tracking information.

A little visibility can go a long way towards reducing uncertainty — particularly when customers are already waiting for their money or an exchange.

**4. Think carefully about refund speed**

Refund speed is critical for ecommerce customers. In fact, up to 80%\[ii\] of shoppers say that how quickly they receive their money back can influence whether they buy from a retailer again.

The longer someone waits to get their money back, the more frustrating the experience can become.

It can also affect what happens to the returned stock. The longer the process takes, the longer that inventory can remain out of circulation.

One way to prepare for this is to automate elements of your returns process using platforms such as [**loop returns**](https://www.loopreturns.com/).

Rather than simply processing refunds, platforms like Loop can help brands create more flexible returns journeys, including exchanges and store credit, giving customers alternative options while potentially keeping more revenue within the business.

The key is to make sure your returns technology and logistics operation work together. A slick front-end returns experience is only as good as the physical process happening behind it.

**5. Get returned stock back into circulation**

It probably goes without saying, but you’ll want a process in place to inspect returned items and get them back into circulation as quickly as possible.

This becomes particularly important during peak season.

Black Friday is only the beginning. You’ve then got Christmas, New Year sales, Lunar New Year and the next wave of promotional activity to think about.

Don’t let perfectly good stock sit dormant in a warehouse while another peak moment passes you by.

The faster you can process, assess and restock suitable returns, the more opportunities you have to sell that inventory again.

----------------------------------------------------------------

From our point of view, returns are just as important as deliveries. That’s why our returns logistics service, [**SAMOS Returns**](https://samos-e.com/services/parcel-returns), is planned with the same care as our delivery operation.

We’ve also made it easier for our customers to automate the process.

[**SAMOS has partnered with Loop Returns**](https://samos-e.com/blog/returns/international-ecommerce-returns-solutions-for-uk-brands-loop-samos), whose frontend portal handles the initial customer return request. Behind the scenes, the SAMOS Returns Logistics Network intercepts returned items locally.

By routing returns through regional drop-off points, including hubs in the US and EU, SAMOS can consolidate parcels and ship them back to your main warehouse in bulk.

This can help significantly reduce peak-season freight costs while making the physical returns journey more efficient.

There’s a customer experience benefit, too.

When a customer hands their package over at a local SAMOS-supported drop-off point, the tracking scan communicates with Loop. This allows Loop to trigger an automated exchange or store-credit process while the physical item is still at a regional hub.

In other words, the customer doesn’t necessarily have to wait for the parcel to travel all the way back to your main warehouse before their return journey can move forward.

**Is it time to start planning your returns process?**

We’d say so.

Even if you sell a product that doesn’t get returned particularly often, it’s worth having a clear process in place so that the occasional return doesn’t take you by surprise.

And if you sell products with naturally higher return rates — footwear, for example, where sizing can be a significant factor — it’s even more important to get your returns operation ready well before peak.

Peak season is busy enough without having to build your returns process while the returns are already coming in.

A little preparation now can make a big difference later.

**Not sure where to start?**

That’s not a problem. We do.

In fact, it’s what we do best.

[**Get in touch**](https://samos-e.com/contact-us) with SAMOS today to discuss how you can start building a more structured, scalable and efficient returns operation, ready for peak and beyond.
