------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

*How to manage international ecommerce returns, reduce avoidable costs and expand into new markets with confidence.*

Thinking about expanding your ecommerce business into a new country or introducing a new product range, but worried about what returns might mean for your bottom line?

You're not alone.

Some countries have a reputation for high ecommerce return rates. Certain products, particularly fashion and footwear, come with their own challenges. And if you've heard enough horror stories about cross-border shipping, customs complications and costly returns, it's easy to see why you might think twice.

But here's the thing: **international ecommerce returns don't have to be a barrier to growth.**

With the right knowledge, processes and returns management strategy, you can make more informed decisions about where to sell, what to sell and how to manage the journey back when a customer wants to return an order.

The key is understanding what drives returns in different markets, anticipating the challenges and putting the right processes in place before your business starts to scale.

[\#](#content-why-international-ecommerce-returns-shouldnt-be-feared "Permalink")Why international ecommerce returns shouldn't be feared
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Let's start with something we say a lot at [SAMOS](https://samos-e.com/): returns are an inevitable part of ecommerce.

Yes, they cost money. And when you're selling internationally, the additional complexity of transport, customs, [duties](https://samos-e.com/resources/duties-and-taxes) and processing can make returns more expensive to manage.

But it's worth looking beyond the immediate cost.

A return is also an opportunity to demonstrate what your brand stands for.

Make the process straightforward, communicate clearly and process refunds promptly, and you can leave a customer with a positive impression, even when their original purchase hasn't worked out.

That's particularly important when you're building a customer base in a new country. A reliable returns experience helps build trust, encourages repeat purchases and gives customers greater confidence in buying from you again.

[\#](#content-when-the-fear-is-the-destination "Permalink")When the fear is the destination
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

**I was speaking to a customer recently who was concerned about shipping to Germany. They'd heard about the country's high ecommerce return rates and were understandably wary**

It's a familiar concern. Germany is often associated with high online returns (estimated up to 50%**[^0](https://ecommerceinstitut.de/ecommerce-returns-in-2026-how-green-nudges-and-ai-are-transforming-the-culture-of-sending-back/)**), particularly in fashion and footwear.

But a high return rate doesn't automatically make a market unattractive.

It means you need to understand what's driving those returns, how they affect your business and what you can do to manage them effectively.

One factor worth understanding is *bracketing*: when shoppers order several sizes or colours of the same product, intending to keep the one that suits them best.

For customers, it's convenient. For retailers, it can mean more parcels coming back, additional processing costs and stock tied up in the returns cycle.

So, how can growing ecommerce brands reduce unnecessary returns without making the shopping experience less appealing?

[\#](#content-1-review-your-payment-methods "Permalink")1. Review your payment methods
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Where customers can order without paying upfront, there may be less immediate financial friction involved in ordering multiple versions of the same product. That can contribute to bracketing, although payment method is only one part of the picture.

Removing invoice payments altogether might reduce some of that behaviour, but it could also put off customers who prefer those options.

A better starting point is to understand local payment preferences, review your own order and return data, and weigh the potential impact on returns against any reduction in checkout conversion.

The goal isn't to put barriers in the way of genuine customers. It's to find the right balance between a convenient checkout and a commercially sustainable returns policy.

[\#](#content-2-find-the-right-balance-in-your-returns-policy "Permalink")2. Find the right balance in your returns policy
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Free returns can help build customer confidence, particularly when you're entering a new market. But they aren't the only option.

Depending on your product category, customer expectations and local requirements, a clearly communicated return fee may help discourage unnecessary orders. Before introducing a fee, though, consider the wider picture. What does your target customer expect? How might a charge affect conversion and loyalty? And what do local consumer protection rules require?

Some major fashion retailers have introduced charges for certain returns, demonstrating that customers can adapt to different policies when expectations are clear.

Ecommerce platform, [Loop Returns](https://samos-e.com/blog/returns/international-ecommerce-returns-solutions-for-uk-brands-loop-samos), helps brands shift returns from a cost centre to a revenue-retention tool with alternative solutions such as instant exchanges, store credit and personalised optimisation. Even small shifts can have a big impact on revenue retention.

[\#](#content-3-improve-localisation-and-delivery-expectations "Permalink")3. Improve localisation and delivery expectations
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Returns don't always happen because a customer changes their mind. Sometimes, the product arrives too late, the description wasn't clear enough or the buying experience simply didn't meet expectations.

That's why successful international ecommerce expansion requires more than translating your website.

Think about the entire customer journey:

- **Set realistic delivery expectations.** Give customers clear delivery windows, reliable tracking and timely updates. Choose carriers that suit your service requirements and the destinations you're targeting.
- **Localise product information properly.** Translate descriptions, size guides, checkout information and FAQs so customers understand exactly what they're buying.
- **Make your returns policy easy to find.** Explain how returns work, what they cost and how refunds are handled before customers reach checkout.
- **Consider a** [**returns service**](https://samos-e.com/services/parcel-returns). Engaging a returns partner will help ensure a faster, more streamlined and transparent cross-border reimport.

These details might seem small, but together they can make a meaningful difference to customer confidence and the number of avoidable returns you receive.

[\#](#content-look-beyond-the-return-rate-when-choosing-a-market "Permalink")Look beyond the return rate when choosing a market
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There's another reason not to dismiss Germany based on its returns reputation.

A market's potential isn't determined by return rates alone. You also need to consider purchasing power, customer acquisition costs, average order value, competition, repeat purchase behaviour and the operational cost of serving that market.

A country with higher return volumes could still be commercially attractive if customers spend more, return regularly to buy again or generate a stronger lifetime value.

And a market with fewer returns isn't automatically the better opportunity.

Italy, for example, can present different consumer expectations and purchasing behaviours from Germany. The same applies when comparing Europe with the US, Asia-Pacific or the Middle East.

Rather than asking, "Which country has the fewest returns?", ask a more useful question:

**Which markets offer the right opportunity for our business, and what do we need to do to serve customers there successfully?**

That's a much better starting point for making informed international expansion decisions.

[\#](#content-when-the-fear-is-the-product-managing-returns-in-fashion-and-footwear "Permalink")When the fear is the product: managing returns in fashion and footwear
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sometimes, the concern isn't where you're selling. It's what you're selling.

For growing ecommerce brands, categories such as apparel and footwear can look particularly daunting because sizing and fit make returns harder to avoid.

A customer might order three pairs of shoes in different sizes because they're unsure which will fit best. Another might buy several outfits for an event, intending to return the ones they don't wear.

These behaviours can increase return volumes, add processing costs and complicate stock management. It's understandable that a business might hesitate before entering a category where returns are part of the equation.

Recently, we spoke with a fashion retailer that was considering expanding into occasionwear. They were interested in the opportunity but concerned about stories they'd heard about one-time purchases and high return volumes.

It's a valid concern. But, once again, the answer isn't necessarily to avoid the category.

It's to understand the risks and put the right measures in place.

[\#](#content-how-to-reduce-avoidable-ecommerce-returns "Permalink")How to reduce avoidable ecommerce returns
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When customers can't try something on before buying, they rely on your website to help them make the right decision.

The more accurately you set expectations, the better the chance that what arrives is what they wanted in the first place.

Here are three practical ways to improve your product information and reduce avoidable returns.

**1. Localise your size guides**

Don't assume that a size chart designed for one country will work everywhere.

Make sure measurements, sizing conventions and fit descriptions are appropriate for the market you're targeting. Where possible, include actual garment measurements alongside standard sizes.

An S, M or L alone doesn't always tell customers what they need to know.

**2. Help customers find the right fit**

Size and fit recommendation tools can help shoppers make more informed choices. Depending on your audience and budget, this might mean a straightforward fit guide or a more advanced sizing solution that uses customer measurements and brand preferences.

The right tool depends on your product range and customer needs, but the objective is the same: help customers choose confidently before they buy.

**3. Show the product properly**

Good product imagery does more than make your website look appealing. It helps customers understand what they're purchasing.

Use clear images from multiple angles, close-ups of fabrics and finishes, and video where it adds value. Explain how materials feel, whether a garment stretches and how it fits. If you use models, include their height and the size they're wearing.

The more helpful your product information, the less room there is for unpleasant surprises when the parcel arrives.

[\#](#content-how-to-scale-your-ecommerce-returns-process-as-your-business-grows "Permalink")How to scale your ecommerce returns process as your business grows
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Understanding your market and product is one part of the equation. Being operationally ready is another.

A returns process that works when you're handling a manageable number of orders can quickly become a problem as international sales grow.

Manual processes, disconnected systems and limited visibility might be workable at first. But as volumes increase, they can lead to slower refunds, more customer service enquiries, stock sitting in limbo and avoidable costs.

That's why it pays to invest in an ecommerce [returns service](https://samos-e.com/services/parcel-returns) before returns become a problem.

[\#](#content-dont-overlook-customs-and-duties-on-international-returns "Permalink")Don't overlook customs and duties on international returns
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There's one more area that deserves attention when you're managing international ecommerce returns: customs.

A cross-border return isn't always as simple as sending a parcel back the way it came.

Depending on the countries involved, the original export arrangements and the goods themselves, returned products may need specific documentation to support their re-entry and any applicable duty relief.

If the paperwork is incomplete or inaccurate, you could face delays, additional charges or unnecessary administrative work.

That's why it's important to understand the customs requirements for each trade lane before you start shipping at scale.

Make sure your documentation correctly identifies the goods and their status, and that your returns process accounts for the relevant customs procedures.

Four things to get right before expanding internationally

If there's one thing to take away from all this, it's that there's no universal approach to international returns.

What works for a German fashion customer might not work for an Italian shopper. What makes sense for footwear might be completely unnecessary for a one-size product. And a returns policy that suits an established retailer might not be right for a growing brand entering its first overseas market.

Before expanding, take the time to get four things right.

**1. Understand your target market.**

Look beyond headline return rates. Assess customer expectations, commercial potential, local consumer protection requirements and the cost of serving customers in that country.

**2. Adapt the customer experience.**

Tailor payment options, product information, delivery promises and returns policies to the markets you serve. A one-size-fits-all approach rarely delivers the best results across different countries.

**3. Build your returns processes early.**

Don't wait for rising return volumes to expose gaps in your systems. Make sure your workflows, reporting and stock recovery processes can scale with your sales.

**4. Plan for the journey back.**

Consider carrier arrangements, customs documentation, refund timelines and stock recovery as part of your international expansion strategy, not as an afterthought.

You don't need to eliminate returns to build a successful international ecommerce business. You need to understand them, plan for them and manage them well.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[\#](#content-what-are-international-ecommerce-returns "Permalink")What are international ecommerce returns?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

International ecommerce returns occur when a customer sends an online purchase back to a retailer across an international border. Managing them can involve reverse logistics, international transport, customs documentation, refunds, stock recovery and compliance with local consumer protection rules.

[\#](#content-how-can-ecommerce-businesses-reduce-international-return-costs "Permalink")How can ecommerce businesses reduce international return costs?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Businesses can reduce avoidable return costs by improving product descriptions and sizing information, setting realistic delivery expectations, localising the customer experience, reviewing returns policies and automating returns workflows. Accurate customs documentation and efficient stock recovery can also help prevent unnecessary costs.

[\#](#content-what-should-a-business-consider-before-expanding-into-a-new-ecommerce-market "Permalink")What should a business consider before expanding into a new ecommerce market?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Consider local customer expectations, product demand, likely return volumes, payment preferences, delivery performance, consumer protection requirements, customs procedures and the cost of managing returns. Looking at these factors together provides a more complete picture of a market's commercial potential.

[\#](#content-how-can-businesses-make-international-returns-more-scalable "Permalink")How can businesses make international returns more scalable?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Scalable returns management combines clear workflows, automation, accurate reporting and efficient stock recovery. Businesses should establish these processes before return volumes increase, so they can maintain customer service standards and operational visibility as they expand.
